While we had tasted plenty of wines on our gastronomic tour and day-to-day living in Florence, we decided that our trip to Italy would not be complete without a visit to a winery for traditional wine tasting.

Probably one of the best wine tasting/tours we have ever been on, our guide Gino gave us a two-hour tour of the grounds, cellar and castle, and educated us on the philosophy, love and life of wine in Italy. His passion for what he does sounded like poetry to our ears, and I knew that Fletch was aching inside to have his same life.

During our friend Caryn’s visit, she mentioned that she new of a castle that offered wine tours and tasting, including a pairing of wine and food. This prompted us to seek the help of our local wine store owner and he suggested the vineyard of one of Italy’s founding members of the Consorzio Chianti Classico. It was just outside of Florence and easy to get to. So the three of us hopped on the local bus (that way no one had to worry about driving) and headed to Castello di Verrnazzano.

Our tour ended with tasting four of their wines, each paired with a different Tuscan delicacy and an animated show of how to tell a real sommelier from an imposter. Napa could definitely learn a few lessons from this winery and especially from our guide Gino.
