| We decided to end our Tuscan driving adventure by watching the sunset from the mountain-top town of Volterra, northwest of Siena. On our way to Volterra, we stumbled across an abandoned farmhouse that beckoned us to stop. It sat perched atop a lone hill and after attempting to drive up its dirt driveway (the ruts and potholes were almost bigger than our car), we opted to hike up to the stone remains and take a closer look. Through the rubble we could still make out where a kitchen might have been, a brick oven was almost perfectly intact and we could easily appreciate the views its inhabitants would have enjoyed. |

| Racing against the dipping sun, we made our way back to our car and gunned it to the gates of Volterra. That Siecento sure could corner, although Fletch and Caryn were suspiciously silent as I squeeled around each corner. I was determine to make it before the sun set. And it was worth the effort. We arrived just in time to watch the valley below transform from pinks to purples to deep blues and then black. It was spectacular. We spent some time wandering through the streets of Volterra and settled on a local’s restaurant for dinner where we proceeded to have a mouth-watering bruschetta of white beans and garlic and by far the best pizza in Italy. It was the perfect way to end our driving tour of Tuscany. |
