Via dell’Amore, or Lovers Path; what more needs to be said except if you aren’t already in love, this walk will certainly inspire you to fall in love. Part of the Blue Trail, an 11 km route connecting the five towns of Cinque Terre, the walkway is literally carved out of the mountains high above the shoreline and offers breathtaking views of terraced vineyards juxtaposed crashing waves and sheer limestone cliffs.
We started at the Riomaggiore train station where we had a chance to view two life-sized paintings by artist Silvio Benedetto who happened to be staying at the Villa Argentina. He and his assistant were kind enough to share a few minutes with us while we praised him for his work (his work also filled the walls of our hotel). Later that evening, his assistant gave us a book on how the two station paintings came to be.

If you start in Riomaggiore, be prepared to shell out 3 Euros per person. The fee is charged for tourists only. This bothered us at first, but after we climbed the steps and caught our first glimpse of the panoramic views the trail provids, we quickly forgot about the 3 Euros. In fact, we eventually found ourselves joking about the “pay to walk” path when Fletch had to invoke his “strongest man in the world” powers to practically hold up the crumbling trail in one spot so we could safely pass.
It takes about five hours to walk the entire trail (one direction), but we only made it as far as Manarola (the next town over) since we were anxious to begin our gastronomic adventure. It was enough though to understand why this stretch of the trail was named Lovers Path.
