No visit to Paris would be complete without a visit to Versailles, which also happened to be one of Fletch's favorite places he visted on an earlier trip to France. Known for being the grandest and most famous chateau in France, we found Versailles to be just that.

A self-guided audio tour (which is definitely worth the 5 euros) allowed us to move through the palace at our own spped, and since it was winter, we had the luxury of lingering without having to fight crowds. Each room seemed grander than the next, and I couldn't help wondering how they could possibly be efficient in keeping the chateau presentable for royalty unless they had at least one hundred people cleaning everyday. (This must be the ever-present "clean gene" in me.) We joked about what we would do if we owned the palace and daydreamed about what life was like "back then". Just as we had read about, the Hall of Mirrors is striking and the accompanying story detailed on the celing is breathtaking not just for the craftsmanship, but the history itself. We had both studied the history of this time period (1682 to 1789) to some extent and found pleasure in being able to bring physicality to its story.
Not only was a glorious palace built in Versailles, but a garden that you could wander in for days. Gardens so beautiful, that they come close to overtaking the majesty of the palace. While the winter cold limited our stroll through the gardens to less than an hour, we could only imagine what it would look like in spring, summer, etc.
