Known for one of the best Tuesday markets in the Provence region, Vaison la Romaine is the place to visit if provincial markets are your passion. It also is the place to tour two-cities-in-one where you have the modern and the ancient divided among a lower provincial-type town and a hill-top village lined with cobblestone streets and no cars.

We happened to meet up with a group of women traveling to Vaison la Romaine at the train station and found we had all made the same mistake reading the bus schedule (the only way to get to Vaison). It was a holiday week, so we had a three hour wait for the next bus which would mean no market experience.
We decided to try Vaison a second time with my sister and brother-in-law (this time by car) to truly enjoy the spectacular scenery and meander without worry through the ancient hill town. Although on this visit we were too late to walk the entire market, we were able to gather picnic supplies and secure a spot on a ridge overlooking the entire valley.

We agreed to share a cab in order to make the market and parted saying we would see each other at the bus station for the ride home. We had a chance to enjoy the market and take in many of the ancient ruins (Vaison boasts a mini Pompeii) before heading for the bus back. However, somehow we made a second mistake reading the schedule and missed the last bus home, resulting in a second cab ride with our friends. At least we were all able to have a good laugh about it.
