"I am a part of all that I have met. Yet, all experience is an arch where through gleams that untraveled world where margin fades, forever and forever when I move."

While full of historical information, life-sized exhibits and informative pictorials; this museum is not for the weak at heart. In fact, before we went in we thought we would be joking and ribbing each other over what we would see, only to be silenced by the starkness and reality that much of these practices continue today in many countries. Educational and certainly worth the visit, it was a difficult truth to be confronted with.

A last minute addition on our gastronomic tour, San Gimignano, or “medieval Manhattan” proved to be the perfect ending to our trip. Not only did we have a chance to view “Italy’s best known village”, we were given the unexpected opportunity to tour the Museum of Torture and Capital Punishment. We figured that the museum’s placement was a strategic decision based on San Gimignano’s medieval roots and feuding nobles who built the city.
We spent the rest of the afternoon regaining our lightheartedness by wandering through the streets, staring up at the stone towers and gathering necessities for a picnic. Spring felt like it was arriving early and we felt obliged to take advantage of it. We found a quite spot where we were able to dangle our feet over what felt like the edge of the world.
Our walk back to the car gave us a birds-eye view of the surrounding vineyards, orchards and olive groves and started Fletch and I thinking about our next visit to Italy. While we love Florence and city living, our hearts are rooted in the countryside—next year.
Whether we were still feeling the after effects of the museum, or we knew that our drive back to Florence would mark the end of our journey, it was a quite ride all the way home.
