| Fletch had read about San Galgano Abbey in our guidebook and its description put this sight as a must-see on our list of Tuscan stops. Considered one of Italy’s greatest Gothic buildings, Abbazia di San Galgano was built between 1218 and 1288 and served as Tuscany’s leading monastic power. Today the abbey stands roofless, the walls are slowly crumbling and the interior is basically a shell with little more than a stone bench that seems almost miniature against the abbey’s towering pillars. Its ominous quite forces one to whisper or not even talk at all, but its magnificent beauty permeates the wildflower gardens, expansive view and imposing structure. |

| We were fortunate to be able to enjoy this experience by ourselves (well, except for the cats who play owner to the abbey these days) since it was off-season, but we noticed a brand-new parking lot a slight distance from the abbey ready to accommodate the throngs of buses that would make the pilgrimage during summer. |
