“They didn’t build Rome in a day,” therefore one shouldn’t try to see all of the sights of Rome in a day. You can do it in two days though, at least the overview tour. But be prepared for sore feet, glazed eyes and a numb mind; if you are not careful, it can end up being information overload. We decided to test our travel endurance and scheduled a two-day visit to Rome while our friend Caryn was visiting. She had already been to Rome and we hoped to take advantage of her experience to navigate the best route through the sights of Rome. Prior to our arrival, Fletch put together a basic itinerary that would enable us to see the most historic sights in two days, in addition to a side trip to visit the ruins of Pompeii. Luckily we brought our hiking shoes since it turned out to be three solid days of walking on uneven, cobblestone streets.

Our hotel (Hotel Smeraldo) was centrally located and within walking distance to almost all of the key sights in Rome and a stone’s throw from some incredible restaurants frequented by the locals. It made it much easier to bare the rigorous schedule we had put together for ourselves.

Unfortunately Caryn wasn’t so lucky and finally conceded to the roads of Rome by trading in her most comfortable boots for a pair of walking shoes. NOTICE: Rome-bound travelers, you are forewarned.

Since it was day five of the War on Iraq we were a bit concerned with the media-hyped anti-American sentiment that we were told was brewing around the world; but like every other place we had visited in Italy, found that we had nothing to worry about. While we saw posters plastered around the city, we were reminded that America is not the target of criticism, Bush is. All they really want is peace for the world.
