Lucky enough to have Fletch's childhood friend Ronnie and his daughter Tess serve as our personal tour guides, we spent two days wnadering some of the hundreds of trails that crisscross down the side of the Niagara Escarpment (about ten miles below the Falls) down to the river's edge. The scenery was incredible. One of the two days, we scheduled an early morning hike and perfectly timed our descent to catch the sun crest over the side of the escarpment, lifting the morning mist and warming the rocks beneath us. We spent more than an hour watching hopeful fisherman enjoy their mid-week recreation (it was Thursday) and dangled our feet in the brisk water. Yes, even I tempted the cold waters and was relieved to find that it was warmer than the Pacific Ocean. We must of been there on a good day. Not only did we spend time at the river's edge, we stolled through the quaint town of Niagara-on-the-Lake (a must-see for any visitor), stopped for some local wine tasting (Niagara is fast becoming a mini-Napa) and even enjoyed some of the "Vegas" nightlife that downtown Niagara Falls is known for. |
