Monaco--if we had money to sock-away (no, I didn’t say hide), we’d put it in this perfectly planned oasis just to come back every year and enjoy the sights. Everything seems to be gleaming in Monaco, right down to the marble hallways of the train station.

We spent most of our day lounging at a second-row table of the Café de Paris, directly opposite the Hotel de Paris and kitty-corner to the stunning Casino. It was the ideal place to people watch, especially since the Grand Prix was just days away. Like St. Tropez, we weren’t quite sure who we were looking at, but sight-seers held back by moveable barricades would ooh and ah as various individuals would peak their heads out from the revolving front door of the hotel. There also seemed to be a continual parade of the world’s finest cars. From Bentley’s and Ferraris to Porches and classic Mercedes, it was an auto-lover’s playground. Our oohs and ahs were mostly for the cars, the silicon madams lunching at nearby tables and the fantasy-sized yachts overflowing the harbor.

We managed a walk up to the “old” city for a closer look at Prince Rainer’s palace (the distance from the casino looks daunting, but the self-directed walkways take no time at all). The views were spectacular and well-worth the hike. We were also rewarded with a fabulous meal at an incredible restaurant siding a hidden courtyard where the service was impeccable and the food note-worthy. (Unfortunately we can’t remember the name of the restaurant, but if you would like to take us there we will show you personally.)
