| Since Fletch had read three of Peter Mayle’s “A Year in Provence” stories, I had read one and his sister had given us one of Mayle’s books for Christmas, we thought Menerbes (the town that his series focuses on) was a must-see stop. As we expected, our drive to the hillside town was beautiful. Aging stone houses that had been meticulously renovated were perched among rows of coquelicots (poppies) and vineyards. The streets boasted the same quaintness we had read about. What we weren’t expecting was the unfriendly attention that was given to our arrival. |

| If Menerbes was tired of tourists invading their town, we certainly knew it. From the tight-lipped store-owner that barely spoke two words to us when we bought some souvenirs to the overtly rude waitress who couldn’t manage even a fake smile for us when serving our drinks, the people of Menerbes were not happy. The chilly weather, despite the sun had us quickly finishing our drinks, skipping the tour of town and hopping back into our car to the safety of good feeling and fun. |
