Every local we ran into told us a visit to Provence would not be complete without a stop at Les Baux. A city entirely carved into, out of and on top of a rock 650 meters high, it was constructed by a paranoid feudal lord who was afraid of being attacked.

Most spectacular are the surrounding views from the top where you have a chance to spy some of Provence’s most lavish homes nestled among expansive vineyards, olive groves and neatly maintained rows of growing produce.
We spent our day their playing like little kids. You can climb over most of the ruins (we did), and pretend that you are a villan or robber trying to storm the lord's fortress and you have been arrested and sentenced to the stockades (we did this too!).
