| We were excited to share a few days in Florence with Steve and Charmane since it was our first opportunity to show friends from home how we actually lived. It was also an opportunity for Fletch to demonstrate his culinary expertise, and between Fletch and Steve (also a dedicated food-lover and fellow chef), we were certain that our gastronomic tour would not suffer. So, while the men explored the wonders of the fresh food market, Charmane and I explored the splendors of the “inexpensive” Italian clothiers. They came back with bags filled; we came back with only eyes filled, but items earmarked for another day. Since Fletch had mastered his Italian lasagna a few weeks earlier, he and Steve decided that they would try to perfect it by infusing Fletch’s traditional recipe with Steve’s own version of bolognese sauce. A slowly-cooked meat sauce of veal, pork and beef lovingly layered with spinach, fresh mozzarella cheese, noodles and about three pounds of ricotta cheese, it must have weighed about ten pounds per slice. In fact, it took the four of us three days to eat it! |

| We had just about finished gorging ourselves with lasagna when an unexpected visitor paid us a special visit. Fletch and I had briefly met him before, but had never been formally introduced. Steve was finally able to extract his name (Flavio) before he sat down to enjoy the end of our dinner and proceeded to eat an entire slice of lasagna himself. We didn’t consider this bizarre until his girlfriend Ashley showed when we popped the cork on our fourth bottle of wine. Although, after spending a few hours getting to know them better, we found that they were the alter-ego of both Fletch and myself and invited them to join us for the remainder of our gastronomic tour. |
