We couldn't think of a better place than the islands of Southern Thailand to spend our Christmas holiday, and decided on Ko Tao located off the Eastern seaboard. Our "splurge" of the trip, we pre-booked a scuba holiday in a beachside resort, ensuring a Christmas we wouldn't forget. And memorable it was, starting with the boat ride to Ko Tao.
We decided to take the night boat from Chumphon. Outfitted with mattresses instead of seats; it resembled more of a floating motel without the privacy of individual rooms than a traveling boat. We kept telling ourselves that it wasn't as bad as we thought, until Fletch woke up with a smashed cockroach underneath his back. It was certainly worth the experience though, and we were able to witness one of the most incredible sunrises from the boat window as we neared Ko Tao.

In addition to gifting ourselves with scuba lessons for Christmas (see Underwater Adventure), we decided to rent a boat and spend Christmas Day snorkeling at the various sites around Ko Tao. For the full day we had a guide and a boat at our disposal. Determined to play Jacques Cousteau for the day, we searched for the most unihabited beaches and coves. When we tired of that game, we resorted to letting our guide take us to the typical tourist snorkel spots.

Fletch got a chance to play boat mechanic when our guide ran over his own anchor rope. Acting as if he wasn't sure how to free the rope from underneath the bow of the boat, it finally took Fletch to put on his mask, swim underneath the boat and pulled the rope loose. We figured that we would have been sitting there all day if Fletch didn't volunteer for the job. Still, we couldn't have wished for a better Christmas holiday.
