It was difficult to plan our itinerary for Southern Thailand. With so many places to visit, islands to see, and recommendations from fellow travelers and travel books, we finally decided to consult with the weather reports and let them be our guide.
Wanting to start as far South as possible and then make our way bak up North where our trip would end in Bangkok, we selected Ko Lanta for our first destination.
Our first taste of island living, we were met with make-shift roads (mostly dirt with potholes larger than small ponds), wooden bungalows, outdoor restaurants, Rasta bars every fifteen steps, and miles and miles of white sand.
We settled in at a beachside resort that was designed for lounging, although every place in Ko Lanta is designed for lounging. Called Nice Beach (and it was), we spent most of our days braving the extreme heat (90+ degrees with 200% humidity) playing like kids in the ocean waves and seeking shade under every palm tree, bush or nearby bar. For two people who have a hard time sitting still, it was the first time on our trip that we felt like we had to make stuff up to do.

One of these aimless days our need to keep busy found us walking down a road where we ran into fellow travelers from Chiang Mai (an Italian couple named Giorgio and Fabiana). Excited at the prospect of having familar faces to talk with, we spent the next day, and evening, swimming, chatting, eating and drinking with them. (We would have even stayed the night in their bungalow, but we figured they would have considered us stalkers.)
We didn't realize how much a familar face means to you when you are traveling for an extended period of time.
