| As much as we loved hanging around the backpacker's area of Bangkok (warning: it's hard to leave), there is another wonderous sight that is a must-see in Bangkok, the Grand Palace complex. In fact, just like all guide books will tell you, if there is one place you should visit, this would be it. Not only do you have a chance to view two of the most spectacular exhibits of royalty and religion (Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaeo), Thailand's most important image is housed within its walls--the Emerald Buddha. It is so impressive that it draws silence. |

| While this was the first time we felt we had to fight tourist crowds and wait our turn for pictures, we found that the power of the Buddhist religion overcame any frustration we could have felt. We aren't practicing Buddhists, but throughout Thailand we felt the effects of Buddhism--in every Thai smile, each helpful word, and every easy-going day. And it is infectious, especially when you are standing in front of some of the world's most incredible representations of that religion. We spent the day watching the sun reflect off the millions of glass and mirror mosaics, gawking at the rows of gold Buddhas, admiring the painted stories along the interior walls, and reflecting on our days of Thailand. |
