It seems that there is a festival almost every weekend in Villeneuve. Whether it’s a health fair, a town yard sale or a wine tasting, something is always being celebrated. It was at the Fete de Saint Marc (a festival to celebrate the patron saint of the wine growers) that we were introduced to our first friends in Villeneuve. Herve, like a father, waved down a passerby and asked if we could ride in their car to follow the parade to the vineyards since it was raining. We were thoroughly embarrassed, but grateful for the ride and quietly said goodbye once we arrived.

And we are incredibly lucky to find friends like Philippe and Alina. Not only have they shown us a side of provincial living that we would never be able to experience on our own, they have introduced us to some of Villeneuve’s most special residents—Chrestane, Tony, Isabelle, Bruno, Pascal and Yuki. They have shared fabulous dinners with us, entertained us with delicious comedy and have always saved a seat for us at the town square café. Words cannot express how honored we feel to have been included in their circle, if only for a little while. We were also welcomed into the home of Thierry and Marie-Laure, long-time friends of Herve and Nicole, for a sumptuous dinner and after-dinner clowning around. It’s impossible to understand that people don’t like the French, at least in Provence.

It wasn’t until the next day at the Paques feast when we ran into them again and were able to laugh about the incident that we began a friendship.
