It's nearing the end of June now and Europe is HOT. So hot that we decided it was time to head for the hills and seek the cool temperatures of the Pyrenees. We also decided that after almost three weeks of continuous driving (and sitting) that a long hike was just what we needed. Hello Cauterets!

We gave ourselves two days to explore the mountain tops of Cauterets. Our first day included a hike from the town up 1600 meters to an elevated plateau called the Plateau d'Lisay. It took us the better part of two hours to reach our destination, but we hadn't had a self-induced sweat like that in months. We could all feel the beer rushing out of our pores. The views were spectacular and well worth our effort. Even better, we had the plateau entirely to ourselves.
We rewarded ourselves with a sumptuous dinner of crepes and wine (not to mention this is where we celebrated my 32nd birthday--am I that old?) next to the river which ran through the center of town. A birthday I will never forget.
Our second day of hiking we cheated a bit by riding the chair lift to the top rather than walking. Actually, I don't think we can say that we hiked at all that day since we didn't walk around too much when we arrived at the top. We were all so sore from our trek the day before.
