The original capital of Thailand before being moved to Bangkok, Ayutthaya is a city that gives the Thai visitor a chance to step back in time. We relished this opportunity on our second to last day in Thailand and hopped an early morning train to spend the day admiring the ancient sights. Many people choos to see the city by bike, but limited to one day and with so much to see, we decided to hire a Tuk Tuk and an accompanying guide. For 500 baht (everything seems to cost that much when it comes to a tour) this was probably one of the best decisions we made on our entire trip. We stumbled across a skilled driver who was able to take us to sites that many visitors never have a chance to see. In fact, we ran from site to site like archaeologists discovering ruins for the first time.

Not only did our guide know the sights, his supped-up Tuk Tuk came equipped with a stero system that rivaled most of the systems we've seen driving down the streets of Los Angeles, and an acoustic guitar to keep himself busy at each of our stops. Unfortunately though, his skilled driving landed him a ticket for going through a red light, and a trip to the local police station. We didn't notice his absence at all (busy with one of the many Wats), but his gentile Thai persona spilled the story when he picked us up. Ayutthaya was the perfect way to end our Thailand adventures.
The sights were amazing and the history astounding, especially the clear evidence of the Burmese and Thai conflict. Almost all of Thailand's most sacred Buddhist statues had been beheaded.
