| Still famous for its nursery rhyme (we still don’t know what it is) about the Pont d’Avignon (medieval bridge) and being the Franco Vaticano during the 14th century when Pope Clement V and his court fled from Italy, Avignon is now known as a European Capital of Culture. And while there is plenty to see and do in Avignon, most popular is a visit to the stunning Palace of the Popes. We finally did this during our last week in Provence. Recognized for their annual theater festival held the entire month of July, we also discovered that the residents of Avignon were incredible strikers. Not only did we live through two air traffic control strikes and a rail strike (striking is a national pastime for the French), we watched three weeks pass with all kids out of school since the teachers were "en greve". They are true pros. |
