On the train ride back to Florence from our Valentine's vacation in Venice, we met an Australian couple (well, John is Australian and Trevlynne is South African) who was headed to our same destination. They too had celebrated their Valentine's holiday in the "city of love". We fast became friends after three hours of continual conversation (at least it made the train ride go by quickly) and discovered we had quite a bit in common (or at least a lot to talk about). Once we arrived in Florence we must have been experiencing separation anxiety; we invited them for dinner the next evening. It would be our first dinner party in our Italian apartment and we couldn't think of better guests to share it with. It wasn't until after we extended the invitation that Fletch reminded me that the next day was Sunday and our refrigerator was almost empty (everything in Florence closes on Sunday). However, we were able to find a grocery store that was open, and Fletch turned out a superb meal of chicken breast stuffed with Swiss cheese and sun dried tomatoes, ricotta and spinach ravioli and a mixed green salad. Our Australian friends brought the wine, and our evening was set with another session of great conversation. |
