When planning our year abroad, we discoverd that no matter how little or how much we had seen our friends and family ove the years, it seemed more imporatant than ever to say one last goodbye before we set off on our journey. It was easy to decide that our first stop would be Canada, where we would have a chance to visit with Fletch's parents, two sisters, their husbands, our nieces, nephews, and drop off our ornery cat with Fletch's brother Gordon (to whom we owe a lot). You are a brave man for taking our cat on Gordo!

We didn't realize how much we valued our families until we made this last pilgrimage to say goodbye. It seems that we miss them more now than we ever have. In fact, we even started missing them while they were right in front of us. Even though our young nephew reminded us that we were only leaving for a year (we only visit Canada once a year anyway), we still couldn't help but feel that this visit was quite different from all the others. We don't know whether it was because we knew we would come back as changed individuals, or whether it was fear that something would change with them and we wouldn't be there to see it. Or maybe it was simply the prospect of knowing we were no longer an easy phone call away.

Since Fletch's parents live on the edge of Lake Erie (in a town called Long Beach), we spent most of our days walking the beach, reminising about the our usual Summer stay, enjoying the incredible sunsets and hoping that things would be as exactly as we left them once we returned in August 2003  for our final stop before we head back to Laguna Beach.
